Frequently Asked Questions

Overview

Each team will use the Vex robotics system robot kit and other acceptable parts to create a robot that will compete against one another in friendly competition. Teams are given approximately weeks from the date of the kick-off to design, build, program, and test their robot. At the conclusion of the six weeks, teams come together to compete in a two day competition to determine the overall winner as well as the recipients of numerous other judged awards.

Who can participate?

Any student in kindergarten through 8th grade can participate. Participants may form their own teams or register as an individual and be placed on a team with other individual registrations. Students do not have to attend a Lee's Summit schools.

How many students can be on a team?

We recommend having three to five students per team; however, we will not place a limit on the number of team members.

What if I don't know anything about robots?

No problem! We host many workshops during the six week build season where teams can get help from JRL staff and other veteran teams.

How much does the league cost?

The cost to participate varies depending on the type of registration. For more information on the different registration options and how to register visit the registration page.

What robot kit is used for JRL?

As of the 2023 season, new teams will be provided a Vex V5 starter kit.  Returning teams will be given the option to upgrade to V5 if desired.  Teams are still able to use the previous Cortex/EDR system that has been in use since 2011.

Where can we order additional Vex parts?

New teams or individuals placed on a team will receive a Vex starter kit with their registration fees. Additional parts and accessories can be ordered online at www.vexrobotics.com.

When does all this take place?

Kickoff is in early October and the competition will take place in mid November.  Check the calendar page for details on all the season activities.

What is the time commitment and meeting dates?

The teams main building activities will take place at home where the team can set their own schedule for how often and how long you meet.  We will have workshop nights where you can attend to get any needed help or to practice on the field but these are optional times.

What are the workshop nights?

Workshop nights will be available for all teams to come to our shop to get any needed assistance as well as practice on the game field.  These nights are optional and will rotate on different nights of the week.  Teams are welcome to come and go as necessary during the nights to fit their needs.

Where can we order Vex parts?

New teams or individuals placed on a team will receive a Vex starter kit with their registration fees. Additional parts and accessories can be ordered online at www.vexrobotics.com.

How are students that register as an individual placed on a team?

Once registration closes, all individual registrations are grouped into teams of 3 or 4.  We do our best to group students of similar age or at the same schools.  This is based on all the individual registrations received that year and there are no guarentees that we will be able to achieve this.  While registering as an indivudual is available, we do find that forming a team with students that know each other already can work better.
