Noteworthy This Year

This year, for the first time ever, we conducted a tournament with two competition fields. This allowd us to cycle through matches more quickly and shortened the tournament from three days to just two. Congratulation and thank you to all those that made this monumental accomplishment possible.

Game Summary

Slapshot Field - The Rink

Two alliances of two robots each compete to outscore their opponent in a game called Slapshot. Slapshot is played on an 8 foot by 12 foot field known as the rink. Robots try to score hockey pucks in the low goals and high goals to get as many points as possible. At the beginning of the match, 48 pucks are placed around the field or given to the human players. Robots begin in their designated starting positions on opposite sides of the field.

The match starts with a 15 second autonomous period in which robots drive themselves using only pre-programmed instructions. Robots get bonus points for their team for each puck they score in the autonomous period. Following this autonomous period, the teleoperated period begins and student drivers step forward and drive their robots remotely. During this main portion of the match each alliance tries to gather and score as many hockey pucks as possible to out-score their opponents. Teams can slide or shoot pucks into the low goals along the back edge of the rink, or they can pick up the pucks and score them in the high goals to earn more points. Towards the end of the match, teams can earn a power play and get bonus points if they successfully climb the top shelf located on their side of the field. The alliance with the most points at the end of the match wins!
